History
Joule & Sons was founded by Ian Joule in 1977, the family business was taken over by his son Tom in 1989. The company mainly sold various brands of traditional clothing at country shows and equestrian events. Tom decided to try and sell something different and more colourful than the traditional styles that people wore at the events. He initially had 100 pairs of pink coloured wellies made and they sold out very quickly.
Tom’s new vision for the company also led to him changing the name from Joule & Sons to Joules in 1994. His inspiration was to create his very own clothing collection and by March 1999 he sold his first shirt under the new Joules brand. In 2000 the very first Joules store was opened next to a cafe that was owned by Tom’s father in Leicestershire.
In 2001, almost all the country shows that Tom had intended selling his products at were cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. He then decided to take the Joules brand directly to retailers, a move which opened up new revenue streams for the business such as wholesale and greater exposure to customers.
In 2002 Joules launched its mail order catalogue and the website followed in 2003. By 2010 the company turnover had risen from £3m to £50m and Joules had network of 52 stores by early 2011. To date, the number of stores has increased to 99, and the company turnover for 2015/15 was more than £117m. The Joules brand has also seen successful sales in other countries, notably the U.S and Germany.

Returns & Refunds
If you decide that you no longer want your purchased item you can send it back to Joules with proof of purchase and in its original condition within 28 days for a full refund or exchange. Sale items must be returned within 14 days to receive a refund.
The return options are as follows:
- In Store: You can return the item(s) via your local Joules store, who will process the refund. Please note: you cannot return your item(s) to concession, stockists, and non Joules stores.
- Through the Post: If you have ordered online or via the Catalogue simply complete the returns and exchanges form on your invoice and take the parcel to your local post office with your free returns label. Please ensure to get proof of posting.
Please note that returns are not free during sale periods.
Unfortunately Joules cannot accept returns of the following items for hygiene reasons:
- Swimwear - if the hygiene seal has been removed.
- Underwear - if removed from sealed packaging.
- Earrings - if removed from sealed packaging.
- Toiletries.
